Oncle Wilfrid

Wilfrid H. Therrien

Wilfrid H. Therrien

Dear members,

We have learned recently with regret the death of Wilfrid H. Therrien. Many of you will remember Wilfrid as one of the pioneer members of the Association so kindly known as “oncle” Wilfrid.

It goes without saying that it was difficult to find the right words to express our grief when we learned of his death. He was our friend and it will be difficult to fill the vacuum he leaves and soothe the pain we feel.

We will never forget his joie de vivre, his cheerfulness and the good times spent with him.

On behalf of all its members, the Association address its most sincere condolences to his family.

Terrien becomes Thérien

For a long time now we are asking ourselves when exactly the name Terrien became « Thérien». I scrutinized the records of the parish of Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines, from 1790 approximate year, that François Terrien and Josephte Duclos and his brother Jacques and Amable Bazinet left Terrebonne and headed towards Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines.

From 1841 to 1844, a new priest named J. Lagorce arrived in the parish. On October 4th, Judith Terrien presents for her marriage to François Gaudreau. Judith is the daughter of François Terrien and Judith Archambault, granddaughter of Jacques Terrien and Amable Bazinet and great granddaughter and François Terrien and Marie-Anne Charbonneau. It is this priest who, for the first time, in Sainte- Anne-des-Plaines, has registered the name of Judith Thérien.

The Marriage Act states in section

M. (Marriage) François Gaudreau and Judith Terrien

Following is the content of the Act of marriage:

J. Lagorce, ptre.

During the presence of the priest Lagorce in Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines (1841 à 1844), all acts involving a Terrien have been registered as Thérien. This is obviously of the lineage of the descendants of Jacques, perhaps that there has been some others elsewhere, such as the descendants of André who also writes Thérien.

Another interesting fact about the history of our family Therrien

You probably have read the history of the ancestor Pierre Terrien and his family on the site of the association or in a newsletter of the association or in my book titled «Pierre Terrien et Gabrielle Mineau (Mignot) leur vie, leur famille et leur entourage».

Remember some facts first. After their marriage in 1670, they lived most of their life at Saint-Jean Île d’Orléans and a few years on Île-aux-Grues where are born their first two children, Pierre in 1672 and Louis in 1674. Around 1675 they settled permanently in Saint-Jean Île d’Orléans.

Returning to Isle-aux-Grues, our ancestor is the first Terrien to have lived a few years on this island. Subsequently, it took more than 74 years before one of his descendants settled on this island. This is Josèphe Terrien, daughter of André and Catherine Charland and granddaughter of Pierre and Gabrielle. On November 14, 1741, Josèphe married Jean-Baptiste Chamberland in Saint-Jean Île d’Orléans. After their marriage, they lived a few years on Île d’Orléans where three children are born.

In 1746, the father of Jean-Baptiste makes a donation of a land located in Isle-aux-Grues. This is where they settled and that between 1748 and 1752 four other children are born. They are, Charles, born on August 6, 1748, Claude Joseph, February 17, 1750, in April 1751 another child is born but died at birth and the last is born March 22, 1752. In 1759, the family returns to Île d’Orléans.

Therefore Josèphe Terrien will have lived in Isle-aux-Grues from 1747 to 1758. In my view, no other descendant of Pierre Terrien would have lived on this island since then, but!!

Some years ago, I received a phone call from a woman, Danielle Therrien of the Lanaudière region, which was fascinated by the history of her ancestor who in this case is Pierre Terrien. She had already done some research and found several information on the life of Pierre. Wanting to know more, she obtained my book on the history of Pierre and Gabrielle.

On a few occasions she said she was fascinated by the Isle-aux-Grues, and with her husband, she dreamed of one day to settle there, that they had even purchased a land and construction had already begun. A few weeks ago, Danielle Therrien informed me that they are now residents of Isle-aux-Grues.

This time, it took more than 250 years before another descendant of our ancestor Pierre Terrien established at Ile-aux-Grues.

Genealogical note: Danielle is from the lineage of Ignace, son of Pierre.

If you intend to visit the island this summer, Mrs. Therrien now part of the “Corporation de développement touristique de L’Isle-aux-Grues” will be happy to welcome you. You can find more information at the following address: http://isle-aux-grues.com/
