Trois-Rivières was founded by Sieur de Laviolette July 4, 1634, at the convergence of the Saint-Maurice and the St. Lawrence River. This site was used for many years by aboriginal who came to trade furs with Europeans. Trois-Rivières is the second oldest city in Canada.

The ancestor Jean Terrien arrived in the country around 1665. At that time Trois-Rivières was still a small fortified village of about 450 people.

On January 26, 1667 Jean Terrien married Judith Rigault (widow of François Lemaître). Judith already had 8 children.

The couple settled in Trois-Rivières on a piece of land that Judith had inherited from her first husband, today we find on the site the church of Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Allégresses.
Jean Terrien and Judith Rigault had two boys, one survived, Jean (Baptiste) Terrien born in 1669 and died in 1759 at Nicolet.

Jean (the ancestor) was a trapper and a fur trader. He was in his environment in Trois-Rivières, which was still at that time an important center of the fur trade in New France. Jean Terrien died during the winter 1669-1670.

You can still discover some old places of Trois-Rivières

Since its foundation Trois-Rivières has grown significantly in terms of education, health, industry, etc … In 2001 the new city of Trois-Rivières merged with Cap-de-la-Madeleine and neighboring towns to form an urban area of 135,000 inhabitants. Trois-Rivières is a dynamic city, definitely positioned towards the future.

Death of Diane Pearl Therrien

nullIt is with great sorrow that the Therrien Association announces the sudden passing of Diane Pearl Therrien of Edmonton, Canada. Diane passed away on November 9, 2015 at the age of 62 years young and has been one of most interesting and fun participants at the annual Therrien reunions each August. She not only made every effort to be at each reunion by planning her vacations around them, but she brought many members of her family with her.

Diane also made beautiful quilted blankets to donate to the raffle we held every year at the reunions. They were one of the most sought after prizes at these events. The photo below is an example of her quilt work that she made for the United Way in 2009.

null

Last August she graciously volunteered to be a member of the Association Board and we looked forward to her ideas and contributions to the Association. We offer our sincere condolences to her father Roger and Uncle Claude who often travelled with Diane and to all of Diane’s family. Diane will be missed by all in the Association and was truly a Pearl among us.
