Literary appreciation

Pierre Terrien et Gabrielle Mineau (Mignot), leur vie, leur famille et leur entourage Par Roger Therrien

Book of Roger Therrien

I acquired the French biography written by Roger Therrien at the last ralliement in August 2011. The title is « Pierre Terrien et Gabrielle Mineau (Mignot) leur vie, leur famille et leur entourage ». It is at this rally, held in Saint-Eustache, that I became a member of the Board of Directors of the Association. In fact, it was a birthday gift, that I offered myself one month in advance. My father kept the book for a few months and he read it. Whenever he spoke to me and made me part of his reading, I did not say it, but I look forward that he finished and I can in turn discover the story of my ancestors who came in New France. What a pleasure to find this book I wanted so much to read indeed, you guess that I finally got my birthday gift late, but regardless, it was a great joy! Roger wrote me a short dedication wishing me a good reading, and well I can say that this was the case. This brief text attempts, in a simple way, to share with you my appreciation of the book.

Reading of the first few pages, my first impression was that this book was written with passion, rigor and methodology worthy of a renowned writer.

I have discovered among others the life of Pierre Terrien, his wife Gabrielle Mineau, their families and those of their children. Before learning about the beginning of their lives in New France, including their passage at Ile-aux-Grues and the continuation of the foundation of the family at Ile d’Orléans, I have learn many facts about the origin of our ancestors in France.

I have found of great interest, and a treat for the eyes to be able to view the contract of engagement, different deeds (concessions, acquisitions, exchange, succession, etc.), parish registers and certificates of births, deaths and burials of several ancestors. Paleographic texts, and in many cases the interpretation or summary of the documents, with appropriate details and a few historical notes allow to put everything in context.

I asked myself the question: what was the relationship between the different Terrien from France. Reading the book, I now know that there were some family ties, but I learned that links between neighbours were also of crucial importance for the development of individuals and families in New France.

If you are interested in genealogy, you will discover how Roger Therrien in some cases highlights the importance of knowing not only family relations, but also the neighbourhood relations that our ancestors had. It is a fact that he made me discover thanks to the rigour and research methodology that he used to write his book.

On several occasions, maps and inserts put in context the history described, which facilitates and enhances the understanding of the reading.

I discovered with great interest a family wealth, a large number of children whom some died in infancy, acquisitions of assets to increase the wealth of the family heritage, a way of life in the seigniorial system and the succession after the death of Pierre Terrien and Gabrielle Mineau.

If like me, you are interested in reading this book, even that I recommend it, you can get it either by contacting Roger Therrien at the following email address: rogertherrien4@videotron.ca or even by completing the order form located on the website of the Association at the following address.

My reading is not complete, in fact I have only read one-third. It remains the reading of the chapter on other Terrien came to New France as well as the chapter on the children of Pierre Terrien and Gabrielle Mineau.

It is to follow…

Sylvain Thérien

Biography of Joseph Therrien

It is with pleasure that we announce the publication of a new biography of Joseph Therrien. This biography has just been published by Rachel Laplante, daughter of Angelina T. Laplante. Her mother was on the Board of the association for the years 1985 to 1987.

Here is a summary of Rachel Laplante on the biography she has written.

Mes racines, mes amours

Book of Rachel Laplante

Descendant of Pierre Terrien de La Rochelle, Joseph Therrien, born from a modest family, is determined to escape poverty. So he left for Western Canada where he was employed in a coalmine. He spends his evenings and Sundays to excavate the bed of the river to discover gold. Following the misadventures, he returned to Québec and settled in Saint-Claude, in the parish where his parents also remain. He meets a young girl, Emma Marceau, whom he married and with whom he had five children, including my mother, Angelina Therrien. I do not want to enter into to much details, but I will end by saying that the biography continues with the meeting of my parents, their union and their accomplishments, all decorated with many old photos of my ancestors, the family of Joseph Therrien and my family.

Léo Therrien – Founding President of the Association

Léo Therrien Founding President of the Association of the Ralliement des families Jean et Pierre TherrienFounding a family association is not an easy task. In 1982, however, supported by a team of fourteen devoted individuals, Léo fulfills his dream of founding: Ralliement des familles Jean et Pierre Therrien.

Léo, the eldest of a family of sixteen, is born on March 20, 1939, in Sainte-Monique de Nicolet, of the union of his father, Ovide Therrien, a farmer, and Adélina Pinard, daughter of Napoléon Pinard and Alvina Saint-Louis, married at Sainte-Monique de Nicolet on June 15, 1938

Léo completes his primary education at the 9th concession road school in Sainte-Perpétue de Nicolet, and in 1953, at the age of 14, he enters the Seminary of Nicolet. After his classical college graduation he undertakes a teaching career in psychology at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières.

With a passion for history and genealogy, he devotes his spare time to research in these fields. In 1998 he becomes as Master Genealogist, a title simply not bestowed on just anyone. The accreditation criteria are demanding: one must belong to a history and genealogy association, have served on different committees and have written a book on the subject. He is more than qualified having contributed to the production of histories of several municipalities such as: Sainte-Perpétue de Nicolet where he attended elementary school, Saint-Thomas de Caxton, the area his wife Denise comes from as well as Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Conseil. He has published three volumes containing some 15,000 marriages of the descendants of Jean and Pierre Terrien. He sits on the board of directors of the Société de généalogie de Drummondville, was recently elected a director of La Fédération des sociétés de généalogie du Québec and for several years served on the board of directors of La Fédération des familles souches du Québec.

It is very natural for him to be interested in his own family, the descendants of Jean and Pierre Terrien, who, since their arrival in New France have reproduced in great numbers. Research undertaken over the years has lead to some astonishing discoveries.

While one finds among these descendants some Terrien, Thérien and Therrien, in the United States there are such names as Taylor (he adopts his wife’s name), Farmer, Pharmer, Lander and Terriah. Since retiring from teaching in 1997, Léo spends a great portion of his time researching “Therrien” descendants. He has compiled some 213,000 names and 93,500 marriages for the association’s database. In the summer he re-enacts the role of a notary for the Village Québecois d’Antan in Drummondville.

Léo Therrien died on March 10 2008.

Here is his relationship with Jean Terrien, his first ancestor. Jean Terrien is the 8th great-grandfather of Leo Therrien.
